NEW GOOGLE SEARCH FEATURE SHOWS SHOPPERS IN-STORE INVENTORIES

30/09/21; Inside Retail Asia Google has unveiled new search functions aimed at improving the online shopping experience, including allowing consumers to see retailers’ in-store inventory from wherever they are using their device. The enhancements have been enabled using advances in AI technology, the company said during its livestreamed Search On conference overnight. A new addition to search results – an “in stock” filter – will show if nearby stores have specific items on their shelves. In an example provided by the search provider, someone looking for a kids bike helmet can click on the filter to find stores nearby that have a helmet – right down to a specific brand or style – on their shelves. 04/10/21; Inside Retail Asia Home furnishing giant Ikea has launched the world’s first Ikea Close to You concept store inside the Market Place grocer in Hong Kong’s Discovery Bay. Spanning more than 3000sqft, Ikea Close to You houses more than 110 home furnishing products together with 120 Swedish signature gourmets ranging from meatballs, salmon, sauces to condiments. According to Ikea, the new concept focuses on the digital experience, offering a number of solutions such as self-pick-up lockers that support flexible pick-up time and free shipping. The store features a 2-metre-high interactive screen ‘Digital Experience for Furnishing Inspiration’ that provides 50 home-decorating inspirations and the “Swedish Cooking Interactive Screen” which provides free cooking recipes. ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Convenience store retailers are seeing strong sales return to pre-pandemic levels, and that is boosting their outlook for the remainder of the year. According to the latest NACS Retailer Members survey, three in four operators (74 percent) expect year-end in-store sales to be better than 2020 and 67 percent expect in-store sales will top sales in 2019. Only 11 percent of retailers expect their year-end in-store sales to fall below year-end 2020 sales and 13 percent anticipate sales will be lower than 2019. Retailers are also optimistic about fuel sales. Sixty-seven percent expect fuel sales to be higher this year than last year, while 16 percent estimate that they will drop vs. 2020 sales. $19bn fund bid to pump up hydrogen

27/09/21; The Australian Hydrogen could lower emissions but commercial production may be years away. Australia’s biggest hydrogen developers have called on the Morrison government to create a $19bn Net Zero fund, aimed at slashing emissions and speeding up the fuel’s rollout to the steel and heavy transport industries and in the nation’s gas sector by 2030. With business leaders calling on Scott Morrison to commit to net-zero emissions by 2050 and adopt more ambitious 2030 targets, the industry wants the big commitment from Canberra to ensure business can become a global hydrogen player by 2030 and a top-three ­exporter of the fuel to Asian markets.
