The Victoria Crimestoppers campaign to deter petrol theft has been going for a number of weeks now with an encouraging start.

  • Arrests are being made as a direct result of this campaign
  • Information reports to Crime Stoppers were up 110% during the period of the campaign
  • The campaign was very successful in the media
  • The campaign achieved a social media reach of over 77,000 people with an engagement rate of 15%
  • Over 300 fuel outlets were engaged with the campaign and sentiment from them was very positive with many ordering repeats of campaign collateral or requesting additional / bespoke collateral during the campaign period, which shows just how strongly the campaign messaging and objectives resonates with them
  • Greater engagement with local police stations to discuss the criminalisation of fuel theft and ways in which they can work together to deal with acts of fuel theft.

AACS has been working with a number of bodies in Victoria to initiate a public campaign targeting those people who steal petrol. This is now coming to fruition and attached are images from the campaign FYI. AACS will be contributing funds to Crimestoppers to support this initiative and to reward those who report details of people who steal petrol which leads to convictions.
The key messages for the campaign are:

  • The We See You campaign warns fuel thieves that stealing fuel is a crime, and sends a clear message to those contemplating driving away without paying: We See You
  • The campaign shows Crime Stoppers’ commitment to stopping crime, by partnering with the Victorian Government to support fuel retailers and local businesses.
  • We know that information from the community helps to solve crime, we see it every day at Crime Stoppers, so please get behind this campaign and report what you know.
  • AACS thanks Crimestoppers, the Department of Justice, VicPol and the Vic Government for bringing this campaign to life and I encourage you to fully support it at site level so that we start to see a decline in petrol theft in the state. We may also look to others states for such a campaign as well.
